The Confidence Myth That Keeps Women Stuck

One of the most common things I hear from women is, “I just need more confidence.”
They believe that once they feel confident enough, they’ll speak up more, go for the opportunity, have the difficult conversation, start the business, or step into the next level of their career.
Confidence becomes the thing they’re waiting for. But the truth is, confidence rarely arrives before action.
Many of us have been taught that confident people feel certain. That they know they’ll succeed, know what to say, and don’t question themselves. But when you look at the people who are growing, leading, and creating change, that’s rarely the reality.
Most people don’t start because they feel confident.
They start because they’re willing.
They take the step while still feeling nervous.
They try something new while still figuring it out.
They move forward without having every answer.
And confidence develops because of that experience.
Think about anything you’re good at today. You probably didn’t begin feeling capable. You built that confidence through practice, learning, mistakes, and moments where you realised, “I can handle this.”
Leadership works the same way.
You don’t become confident and then step into leadership. You step into leadership, and confidence grows as you learn to trust yourself through the process.
What often keeps women stuck isn’t a lack of ability. It’s the belief that they need to feel completely ready before they begin.
So they wait. They wait until they know more. Until they’re more qualified. Until they feel less nervous. Until they’re certain they won’t get it wrong.
But growth rarely happens in a place of complete certainty. The women who make meaningful progress aren’t always the most confident people in the room. They’re often the ones who have learned to move forward alongside uncertainty. They understand that discomfort doesn’t always mean they’re not ready. Sometimes it means they’re stepping into something new.
Confidence isn’t about never doubting yourself. It’s about building trust in your ability to handle what comes next. Because every time you speak up, make a decision, try something new, or navigate a challenge, you create evidence that you are more capable than you thought.
So if you’ve been waiting to feel confident before making your next move, ask yourself:
What would I do if I didn’t need to feel completely ready first?
That question might lead you towards the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
